- In Nigeria's Zamfara state, 18 people were killed in an armed attack on a mosque.
According to national media reports, gunmen opened fire on those gathered for Friday prayers in Ruwan Jema district of Zamfara state yesterday. In the attack, 18 people lost their lives and many people were injured.
HE DID NOT PROVIDE INFORMATION ON THE DEATH TOLL
Zamfara Police spokesman Muhammad Shehu confirmed the attack but did not provide information on the death toll. The province has been the scene of fierce clashes between the Fulani, who have been engaged in animal husbandry for 5 years, and some tribes who are farmers.
The state government had announced that armed gang members caught due to increasing security problems in the state would be put on death row. Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has previously banned mining operations in the state due to security issues.
Zamfara Governor Bello Matawalle had called for individual arms to help state residents defend themselves against armed gangs on June 26. The Nigerian army and police reacted to the decision.
